The 2019 Liqui-Moli Bathurst 12 Hour has been run and won in thrilling fashion as Earl Bamber Motorsport's Matt Campbell, Dirk Werner and Dennis Olsen claimed a historic victory on the iconic mountain.
Behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3-R, it took the team until the dying stages of the international endurance to seal the victory, as Campbell pulled off a brave move with just over nine minutes to get into the lead.
Trailing R Motorsport's Jake Dennis on lap 307, the Australian was piling on a heap of pressure on the British driver, before timing his run perfectly and surpassing the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 on the inside to come out of a corner as leader on the other side.
The sensational move came just four laps after Campell overtook Italian Raffaele Marciello for second place in a move that would be considered one of the highlights of the race.
Following his memorable four laps which saw the EBM Porsche steal the lead, the 23-year-old managed to hold on in for the remainder the race to secure the win.
The win caps off another huge moment in what has been a dream 12 months for Campbell, including his memorable class victory in June’s prestigious 24 Hours of Le mans victory.
“I knew it was going to be tough but I didn’t think it was going to be that tough,” Campbell said.
“To do it the way we did in the last stint, was amazing. The car was perfect towards the end... It was great to finally win this race, especially as it’s this car’s last race.”
There was some tense minutes post-race as the result was subject to a post-race investigation which was cleared by Stewards. The move examined was a Campbell pass on 2014 Bathurst 1000 winner Chaz Mostert into The Chase in the final hour, when they were contesting third place.
