Special Yaxley rules Tasmania Motorkhana

Wednesday 19 June, 2019
More than 35 drivers have attended the second round of the Motor Sports Club of Tasmania’s (MSCT) CAMS State Motorkhana Series with Fiat Special pilot Nick Yaxley taking out victory.

With drivers having two attempts at four different challenges across the day and the best timed run from each challenge adding to their final score, it was Yaxley who proved too strong for the rest of the competition.

Coming in second place, just one second behind the sole Club Mitori Italia representative was Joshua How and his Toyota Corolla, after he managed to win two of the four challenges of the day.

How started the event on a high, claiming the first challenge of the day by two tenths of a second over Yaxley, but later found himself behind after the Fiat finished the next challenge one and half seconds faster.

Yaxley continued his charge towards victory by picking up the third challenge and extending the gap over How to two and half seconds with only one challenge remaining.

In both runs, How was faster than the leader and managed to peg the gap back down to just over one second, but it was too late for the Corolla driver and he had to settle for a gallant second place.

Rounding out the podium was another MSCT representative with Damian Midgley and his Mazda 121 finishing a comfortable four seconds over Justin Nicklason and Mitsubishi Lancer.

Behind the wheel of the Daihatsu Cuore, 500 Car Club representative Michael Higgins enjoyed a top five finish after a consistent performance saw him place around the top five a number of times throughout the afternoon.

While the MSCT enjoyed a healthy field taking part in the event, the most impressive achievement was 12 juniors competing in the motorkhana with Jacob Mitchelson steering his Honda Civic to a class victory and a top-20 finish.

With a third of the entry list being in the junior class, club President Jason Milner was proud the event could attract many young drivers, as well put on a great show for attendees.

“Overall, it was a fantastic day and we got a lot of positive feedback from our members, the competitors and the spectators, all of whom enjoyed the action,” Milner said.

“It was brilliant to see so many junior competitors because our focus is to create a family friendly environment and introduce younger drivers into the world of motor sport – so to have these sort of numbers at event is very encouraging.

“Also big congratulations are in order to our winners, as well as a big thanks to our officials and volunteers who turn out rain, hail or shine - without all of them, we wouldn't have a championship.

The MSCT Motorkhana Series will be holding its third round of competition on 30 June at the La Trobe Pits with entries open until 29 June.
