Gerard McConkey and Russell Hewett have enjoyed a winning weekend in the Brisbane Sporting Car Club’s KCF Short Course Challenge - Brunett Sprint after almost claiming a clean sweep.

Behind the wheel of the Living Here Wilston 1999 Subaru WRX, the duo posted the fastest time in every run of the event, except the final one which went to eventual runner-ups Carey Cahal and Ronnie Bustard.

With 13 crews getting three runs at two different stages, their two best times being counted towards their final score and one run of a third special stage, the event was always going to be a test for the crews.

The Subaru pilots had no fear though, finishing more than five seconds ahead of the Cahal and Bustard driven 2009 Mitsubishi Evo 9, as well as the rest of the competition, in each of the first stage’s three runs to go into the break with a healthy 16 second lead.

They continued their good form for the second stage, claiming all three runs once again, only this time it was a much closer affair as the Glendun Group Evo finished just three seconds behind in the final run – the leaders adding just eight seconds to their outright lead.

Cahal and Bustard finally got their breakthrough on the extended final stage, coming in at 10 seconds faster than the leaders, but it wasn’t enough as they settled for second place, 14 seconds behind the winning Subaru.

A different manufacturer made up the final step on the podium, the Steerfast Toyota Corolla KE30 driven by Craig Aggio and Megan Benson earning a solid third place after the first stage saw the duo share second place with Cahal and Bustard,

Rounding out the top five were another two Subarus, as only 13 seconds separated fourth placed Kim Acworth and Ryan Preston with Shaun Dragona and Ray Priest in fifth.

The next Brisbane Sporting Car Club calendared event will be the Inspirations Paint Capalaba Hinterland Rally on 14 September.
