Tuesday 17 September, 2019
Ahead of its highly anticipated debut at Sandown Raceway as part of the Shannons Nationals, S5000 has revealed it will be a support category for the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2020.
Set to be the fastest national race category in Australia thanks to its 5.0 litre, 560hp V8 Ford Coyote ‘Aluminator’ engine, the S5000 will kick of its inaugural season next year at Albert Park on the biggest stage.
Like its first official races to take place at Sandown Raceway and The Bend Motorsport Park later this year, the category is expected to feature a mixture of Australian and international stars, as well as a number of Australian rising talents.
Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) CEO Andrew Westacott believed all motor sports fans will get an instant kick out of the new race cars during the weekend.
“There is always such a strong appetite from our fans for exciting on-track activity, so having the exciting S5000 class at our event is the perfect fit,” Westacott said.
“AGPC is always looking to inspire the next generation of drivers and being able to showcase a new Australian motorsport category not just nationally, but globally, is such a fantastic opportunity for all involved.”
Matt Braid, Manager and Director of S5000 promoter, Australian Racing Group, was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform at the highest level.
“The Australian Racing Group is extremely pleased to confirm that S5000 will be on the grid at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2020,” Braid said.
“These S5000 cars are going to be right at home on the Albert Park street circuit, and we look forward to providing the best racing for the fans.”
With 11 drivers already confirmed for the S5000 historical opening race at Sandown, including Formula 1 star Rubens Barrichello and international veteran Matt Brabham.
The Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2020 takes place at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit on 12-15 March.
