The Light Car Club of Canberra (LCCC) will host its first khanacross for 2020 this weekend with the club proud of members’ interest and support for its grand return.

A full field of 35 entries are expected to compete in the first of the six round 2020 National Patios ACT Khanacross Series, with the majority of competitors either junior of novice experienced drivers.

Taking place at the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club, competitors will have four runs at three different formations, all of which will be slightly amended ahead of each new run.

Part of the club’s event committee, Kim Winks believed members were so excited to return to motorsport that they are willing to play their role to make sure the events could go ahead.

“We are super excited because of the Rally of the Bay’s success last week hyped everybody up,” Winks said.

“Now while this weekend’s khanacross are mainly kids and young adults who have been stuck at home and not able to do much, everyone involved in the club is looking forward to do our own event because they love their motorsport.

“Even in the lead up, there was a lot of eager people. Everyone was waiting for the moment we announced the khanacross, and when we eventually did, we had 15 people enter within the first hour of opening.

“Now that we’re so close to running, everyone is aware of the COVID restrictions and want to do everything they can to make sure we can continue racing.

“We’re also quite fortunate with how supportive the Canberra Greyhound Club has been in helping us get our COVID-19 plan in line with the required guidelines, which has allowed us to run and make sure everyone is safe in the process.”

The club’s plans meet the Motorsport Australia Return To Race requirements including ongoing social distancing, contactless registration and set COVID checkers to make sure everyone is playing by the rules.

For Winks, the support of the location, sponsors and Motorsport Australia have all been key in getting the club’s first khanacross back in motion.

“We had to jump through a few hoops with Motorsport Australia to get this up and going but we really appreciate their patience, understanding and help in getting everything over the line,” Winks explained.

“The Canberra Greyhound Racing Club is completely fenced off, meaning we have gated entries and everyone who attends will be temperature tested upon arrival and given a wrist band to prove they are safe to enter.

“This is the first round of what we will hope be many as we can and we couldn’t do it without the backing of National Patios. Their support has been instrumental in the development of grassroots motorsport in our area.”

The first round of the National Patios ACT Khanacross Series takes place at the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club on Saturday 18 July.
