Participation in Australian motorsport continues to rise in 2021 with a number of state championships boasting record numbers for many of their events.
It’s no secret that the Motorsport Australia Victorian State Circuit Championships have been at the forefront of this positive trend, but now the Motorsport Australia NSW Motor Race Championships are also in the same boat.
For the second time this year, Wakefield Park will welcome a record entry list for its turn to host the championships with more than 150 individuals to line up for the third round of the season.
Three months ago for the first round of the season, the Goulburn based circuit hosted the largest number of competitors for a February meeting in recorded history, and the track has done it again for this weekend – only this time, it’s the biggest turnout for a meeting of any kind there.
Among the eight attending categories include some national level series such as the National Sports Sedan Series and the Australian Formula Ford Series, as well as some regular state staples, including Supersports and Formula Vee.
Despite there being no doubt over the national influence of this race meeting, Wakefield Park Operations Manager Dean Chapman believed those categories weren’t the main reason for this major achievement.
“Everything is running smoothly and we’re absolutely thrilled to have such a huge field of competitors taking part this weekend,” Chapman said.
“Last race meeting was the biggest turnout for a February meeting, and while the May round is generally well attended, this weekend trumps any round that I have seen over at least the five years.
“Our numbers continue to grow and yes, that may be because we have some national categories on display for the round, but I honestly put this weekend’s success down to the hard work of the NSW Motor Race Panel.
“Darren Barlow and his team have been supporting Wakefield Park really well as of late. They are listening and taking on feedback from the competitors, which is now being displayed in the race meetings and the big numbers.
“Every category manager has been really good to work with so while the rise in participation is a bit of a collective effort amongst all stakeholders, more credit must be given to the strength of the Motor Race Panel.
“It’s going to be a really busy weekend. I have no doubt it will be enjoyable and we’re really looking forward to it.”
While Wakefield Park will be enjoying a high quantity of competitors putting on a show for fans this weekend, the quality of names attending the round is also a highlight.
Formula Ford will welcome a host of young talented individuals in its 16-car field including Noah Sands, multiple RA Cup champion Peter Paddon will run in Supersports and Formula Vee will see prominent Toyota 86 Series competitor Michael Sherwell swap tin top for open wheel.
The third round of the Motorsport Australia NSW Motor Race Championships takes place at Wakefield Park on 22-23 May.
