Shane van Gisbergen has secured his third clean sweep of the year after winning the second outing of the NTI Townsville 500.

Like the first race, it was a Red Bull Ampol Race Team one-two with the second placed Jamie Whincup once again finishing up ahead of Shell V Power Race Team’s Anton De Pasquale.

However it was quite a different affair on Sunday as opposed to Saturday's race as van Gisbergen had to wait until the final stint of the race to snatch the lead from his teammate.

Starting in second place beside Whincup, a slow start off the line from van Gisbergen saw him briefly drop behind the two Brad Jones Racing entries of Nick Percat and Todd Hazelwood, before passing the duo and spending the rest of the race chasing down Whincup.

The Kiwi eventually made his move on lap 75, charging home to the chequered flag and taking out his 50th career victory by three seconds.

The Championship leader's 10th win of the season now puts him 245 points ahead of Whincup on the standings and firmly in the box seat for a championship title.

"That’s a pretty awesome number (50 career wins)," van Gisbergen said.

"Again, thanks to Red Bull Ampol Racing; our cars were fantastic.

"Another subpar start from me and then I had to pay for it all race but I feel a lot better today.

"The pace from myself was a lot smoother and just awesome to get another 300-pointer."

Behind the front two, De Pasquale once again ran his own race like he did yesterday, comfortably beating teammate Will Davison to a podium place by a further 17 seconds.

Will Brown’s dream debut season continued after the young Queenslander made an impressive move on Cameron Waters during the final laps to secure a well-deserved fifth place.

Rounding out the remaining spots of the top 10 were Todd Hazelwood in his best result for the year, Tim Slade, Chaz Mostert and Jack Le Brocq.

Another round at Reid Park awaits the Repco Supercars Championship with three races to form part of the WD-40 Townsville Supersprint next weekend.
