John Walker is only one race away from claiming the Motorsport Australia Tasmanian Off Road State Series, with the sixth and final round to be held at Symmons Plains this weekend.
There will be 40 entries taking part in the Symmons Plains 150, with Walker needing a minimum of just three points to clinch the title.
Walker will be heading into this weekend’s event full of confidence, after winning the season’s previous round at Symmons Plains earlier this year in April.
“I guess it gives you a little bit of confidence winning at the same venue, however it was probably one of those races where a couple of guys led at the start and it didn’t end up going their way, so I probably picked up the pieces there in a way, off road is a brutal game,” Walker said.
“It’s been a very pleasing year, obviously with last year it was really interrupted with COVID and everything else that was going on, so I guess it’s reward for a bit of effort.
“It’s definitely exciting being only one win away from victory, however it’s never over until the fat lady sings. Andrew Giffard is still a mathematical chance and he’s a long-time racer so he will be pushing hard.”
Giffard currently sits 18 points behind Walker on 34 points, however he admits he still feels threatened by his close friend off the track.
“Absolutely I feel threatened by him (Giffard), I know Andrew very well, I know the time and effort he has put in to develop his own car and how well he is always prepared, so I certainly think he’s my biggest threat heading into Saturday,” Walker added.
“I’m still a long way off winning anything yet so we will just take it as it comes.
“It’s been a really tough last two years so full credit to the organising committees and all of the organisers for their hard work, they’ve been the ones who have probably suffered the most in the past two years.”
With the Symmons Plains 150 comprising of 150kms and split over four sections, the 40 crews will be tackling 12 laps of the three-kilometre course in each section, giving them plenty of time behind the wheel.
