It’s been another tough Monaco Grand Prix for Daniel Riccardo after the West Australian was unable to make up ground during a rain interrupted race.

Having himself won the famous race in 2018, the last few years in Monte Carlo have proved less than ideal for Ricciardo, with his latest outing ending with a 13th place finish.

Ricciardo’s challenging weekend began on Friday when he fell victim to the famous circuit’s iconic swimming pool chicane in FP2 and crashed on his first proper lap in the session.

Saturday wasn’t much easier for the 32-year-old, unable to make it past Q2 after qualifying in P14.

With a mountain of work ahead of him, Ricciardo gained some spots during the chaotic race thanks to Yuki Tsunoda’s fall down the order and the withdrawal of Kevin Magnussen, however he dropped back down to 13th after being overtaken by Pierre Gasly.

In what was a chaotic edition of the great race, rain caused havoc throughout and even forced a delay to proceedings.

However once the race did get underway, the drivers handled the wet and slippery roads well before the teams began different approached to their tyre strategies as the track dried.

With Gasly one of the first to pit and switch full wets to intermediates, the Frenchman easily chased down Ricciardo before setting the fastest time on lap 15.

A monster crash for Mick Schumacher midway through the race, after he had switched to dry weather tyres, then caused another red flag.

Eventually Red Bull’s Sergio Perez would take out the win after making the most of his track position and switching to medium compound tyres during the red flag break. It would be his first ever victory in Monaco, a result of another mighty defensive performance in holding off Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.

The now three-time Formula 1 race winner’s teammate and current championship leader Max Verstappen rounded out the podium in third, having also held off title rival Charles Leclerc for his place on the podium.

The FIA Formula 1 World Championship continues next month in Baku with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 12 June.
