Harri Jones has secured a spot in the world-famous Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Championship, joining twelve-time champion team BWT Lechner Racing for the 2023 season.
The Queenslander’s rise up the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid was rewarded with a seat in the highly successful team’s 2023 driver line-up, having won the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia last year.
Following his title, Jones began his international journey late last year where he contested both the Porsche Motorsport Junior Shootout in Spain and the opening round of the Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East Championship.
While he wasn’t victorious in the Shootout, Jones did enough to impress BWT Lechner Racing in the Championship’s season opener in Bahrain, having steered the team’s Porsche to a podium.
With the Championship to run at Formula 1 Championship events throughout the year, Jones was eager for the season ahead.
“To say I’m excited is an understatement,” Jones said.
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me. And to not only have the chance to move to Europe and race in the Porsche Supercup, but to do so with the most successful team in the series history, is quite simply a dream come true.
“This year we will be racing at some of the most spectacular venues in the world, including Monaco, Spa and Monza to name a few. I’m already buzzing at the thought, but I know I will need to work harder than ever to ensure we have success on track.”
Team Principle, Robert Lechner was confident Jones would build on his stellar career and experience more success with the Austrian team in Europe.
“I first met Harri at the final round of the 2022 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Championship at Monza,” Lechner added.
“He is a very impressive driver and athlete and after already winning some silverware for the team in Bahrain last year, and of course the 2022 Australian Carrera Cup Championship, we are all very excited to see him race with us for a full season of Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup this year.”
Although the Supercup season won’t get underway until May, the 23-year-old will stay sharp by competing in the next two rounds of the Porsche Sprint Challenge Middle East, which include visits to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Autodrome.
Jones will then begin his Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Championship campaign in Imola as part of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on 19-21 May.
