After a thrilling 2022 season, the Motorsport Australia WA State Speed Event Series will return with a bang this weekend thanks to the bumper entry list of more than 90 competitors.

Celebrating its 25th year anniversary on a high, the series’ first of 13 events for the year will take place at Carco.com.au Raceway and will run as a long track sprint in conjunction with the WA Sporting Car Club.

A number of regulars and notable names headline the 91-car entry list, with John Webb returning to defend his title, only this time, he has upgraded from a Radical SR3 to a Radical SR8.

Ray Ferrari, Cosi Sorgiovanni, Andy Thomas, Lib Palermo and Peter Morley are amongst those who will be the most likely contenders to challenge Webb’s title defence across the weekend and the season as a whole.

While there are lots of similarities to the 2022 season, this year will see the introduction of the Speedevent Cup, which will be open to all classes outside Formula Libre, while the Speed Event Series itself will be run over eight rounds and will include all Formula Libre classes.

Ahead of the season opener, series organiser Phil Morley was thrilled with the amount of interest shown in the series considering the number of registered competitors.

“Our series is well and truly alive and it’s so exciting to see how many people around the state are keen to get involved,” Morley said.

“We have 126 registered competitors for the season and 91 entered for this weekend – which is the highest entry list for more than six years.

“What’s fantastic about our series, which is highlighted in this weekend’s entry list, is the amount of diversity there is across all classes.

“It’s great to see the Porsches back in the series too. There are 19 Porsches from a new club in the Porsche Owners WA, with all kinds of Porsches from Boxters through to 997.1 Cup cars.

“Of course, John will be the driver to beat this year and I am sure his SR8 Radical will once again be towards the top of the standings at each round, so it will be interesting to see which drivers will be the ones to stop him.

“All in all, we’re really looking forward to the weekend and a big thanks to everyone for getting this season off a great start.”
