From the far east of New Zealand to the far west of Australia, the Repco Supercars Championship returns this weekend with the highly anticipated Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint.
Serving as the fourth round of the 2024 season, all eyes will be on Carco.com.au Raceway for what should be an epic weekend of racing – both as a pure spectacle and for the ramifications it could have on the title race.
Perth has often been considered a fan favourite since it first held a round of Australia’s premier racing category in the early 1970s, and this weekend’s twilight races should continue that love affair.
From a sporting point of view, the top three drivers have begun to break away a little from the rest of the field with Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Will Brown and Broc Feeney occupying the top two slots and Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert sitting comfortably in third place.
Brown and Feeney have been in incredible form this season with three wins each, however, it’s the former’s consistency that has been the main catalyst to his charge to the top thanks to his four runner-up finishes.
The duo is likely to pick up where they left off from New Zealand and continue their entertaining battle as they both look to replicate their results from last year’s visit to WA.
Sitting only 100 points behind in third is Mostert, and the Queenslander will need to start finding some big results if he is going to relevant in this year’s title race – a first win in Perth since 2014 or a first Supercars win since the 2022 VAILO Adelaide 500 would go a long way in helping his cause.
Behind the top three, the battle for fourth extends all the way down to 15th, with 99 points separating Richie Stanaway and Cameron Waters.
Waters may consider himself unlucky to be where he is having picked up two pole positions this year, only to be sitting in 15th place with a P5 being his best result in eight races.
With just over two thirds of all Supercars race winners in Perth having been from the front row, if Waters can snag his third pole position of the year, then getting a first win of the season could be within his reach.
One major factor that will add to the drama is the regulation change surrounding minimum tyre pressure, which has been slightly reduced in the hopes that the lower pressure will allow drivers to race harder for longer – especially on a circuit known for high degradation.
With a new format being introduced for the round and the event switching from three sprint races to two longer 55-lap races, there will be plenty of opportunities for fans to see the cars in action, including a one-hour practice session on Friday and a 20-minute practice session on both Saturday and Sunday, setting up Boost Qualifying and a twilight race each day.
Add a strong support bill featuring the Dunlop Super2 and Super3 Series, First Focus Radical Cup Australia, Gulf Western Oils Touring Cars Masters and the Battery World Aussie Racing Cars Super Series, and there is plenty to like about this weekend.
The Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint takes place at Carco.com.au Raceway on 17-19 May.
