Taylor Gill secures a double victory at Rally de Portugal

FIA Junior World Rally Championship – Rally de Portugal

Australian rally star Taylor Gill and co-driver Daniel Brkic have claimed their second Junior WRC victory this season, with their Portgual win seeing the Aussie pair drawing level with Mille Johansson to lead the drivers’ standings with 59 points.

Gill delivered a masterclass during Saturday’s opening stages, showcasing incredible speed in his Ford Fiesta Rally3 and demonstrating tactical driving skills that allowed him to hold a one minute lead overnight.

Throughout Sunday’s six-stage final leg, Gill remained focused to take the win by 13.4 seconds over Johansson.

From Stage Two onwards, the Aussie was in full control due to an early error from Johansson. However the Swede kept the pressure on Gill, recording 13 fastest stages throughout the rally.

This win wasn’t Gill’s only success of the weekend as he also took the WRC3 class victory, moving him into the championship lead ahead of Arthur Pelamourgues.

“We’ve won the rally, so I’ll always take that,” Gill said.

‘We’ve proved we can be consistent and stay out of trouble and Johansson has proved he can win stages, so at the end of the day it is what it is.

“We share the Championship lead despite winning the first two rallies, but we know the points system and we’re managing it.”

The third round of the 2025 Junior WRC heads to Greece on 26–29 June, with hopes Gill and Brkic can continue their winning streak.

GB3 Championship – Zandvoort

Pat Heuzenroeder dominated round two of the 2025 GB3 Championship at Zandvoort, marking both his maiden GB3 feature race win and Xcel Motorsport’s first championship victory.

The Australian carried his fierce testing pace into the race weekend, building on his consistent top three performances on Thursday and Friday.

Saturday’s qualifying saw Heuzenroeder unleash his full potential, demolishing the field with a staggering pole position margin of just three-tenths of a second. He converted this advantage into a masterclass victory, stretching his lead to a crushing 6.5 seconds at the checkered flag.

Sunday’s feature race saw Heuzenroeder narrowly miss pole in a very tight second qualifying session. Undeterred, the 17-year-old launched from third to second by the opening corner, then chased the race leader throughout to finish just five-tenths behind.

The reverse grid finale saw Heuzenroeder climb from tenth to seventh in just six laps in a safety car interrupted session.

Heuzenroeder’s consistency earned him the Omologato One to Watch Award and the Sunoco Fastest Lap Award.

Alex Ninovic also had a successful weekend at Zandvoort, finishing within the top ten for all three races.

The young Aussie claimed second position for the first race, starting just behind Heuzenroeder. In Race One, Ninovic settled for fourth, finishing behind Aussie teammate Gianmarco Pradel.

Noah Lisle was also in the mix, the finishing race one in seventh.

The second qualifying session saw Ninovic secure his first GB3 pole, transferring it into a victory for race two. Pradel finished seventh, crossing the finish line three-tenths ahead of Lisle.

Race three for these Aussies was a close battle, with Lisle finishing in fifth and Ninovic ninth. However it was an unfortunate race result for Pradel, turning Kai Daryanani around and sending both of them off the track resulting in a DNF.

Heuzenroeder now leads the championship by 14 points, followed by Ninovic, Lisle and Pradel, with the next round at Spa-Francorchamps Circuit in Belgium on 30 May–1 June.

Formula 1 – Imola

Oscar Piastri stood third on the podium at Imola, finishing almost 13 seconds behind race winner Max Verstappen.

The Australian started on pole and produced a strong launch before Verstappen stormed around the outside to take the lead into the Tamburello chicane.

Piastri attempted to reclaim the position, but two safety cars played in Verstappen’s favour, granting him two free pit stops to maintain his lead.

Late in the race, Piastri and teammate Lando Norris battled wheel-to-wheel, with Norris snatching second place on fresher tyres.

The next round takes place on 22–25 May for the highly anticipated Monaco Grand Prix.

FIA Formula 3 – Imola

James Wharton faced an uphill battle in Formula 3 at Emilia Romagna, but impressed with a 13th place recovery after a mechanical issue that prevented him from setting any laps in free practice.

The setback left Wharton at a significant disadvantage in qualifying, securing 20th on the grid with a 1:33.096.

Saturday’s sprint race saw Wharton gain four positions before the first corner, but his progress was impacted by multiple interruptions, including a virtual safety car and then a full safety car. A final lap incident at Variante Alta forced him onto the grass, leaving him 22nd.

The 18-year-old saved his best for Sunday’s feature race, executing a calculated drive to gain three places in the opening laps and later capitalising on a rival’s off-track excursion to climb to 14th. His charge to 13th marked his best result of the race weekend.

“It was a challenging weekend here in Imola,” Wharton said.

“Despite a difficult Sprint Race, we ended the weekend with a solid performance in the Feature Race.

“We know the potential is there, but we need to keep working hard, especially on qualifying, so we can start further up the grid and show what we’re really capable of in the races.

“Now, full focus shifts to Monaco, a demanding weekend ahead where we’ll need to give everything.”

FIA Formula 3 will also hit the streets of Monte Carlo on 22-25 May for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Formula Regional European Championship – Spa-Francorchamps

Australian Jack Beeton had a consistent weekend at Spa Francorchamps, securing two top ten finishes.

After the first qualifying session was cancelled due to a red flag, Beeton began race one from 11th and climbed to eighth in an eventful race.

In a wet second qualifying session, the Aussie again secured 11th. Beeton was on the prowl for sixth during the second race, but unfortunately dropped back a few positions to finish in 10th.

Round three of the 2025 Formula Regional European Championship takes place on 8 June at Circuit Zandvoort.

Formula Regional Americas Championship – Plymouth

Australians Nicholas Stati and Daniel Quimby showed strong pace at the 2025 Road America SpeedTour.

Stati started race one in third, battling wet conditions to finish fifth, a career-best finish in FR Americas.

Quimby had a tougher race, dropping from 10th to 12th after a first turn collision, resulting in a 30 second drive through penalty.

In race two, both Aussies scored within the top ten, with Stati in sixth and Quimby in fourth.

The final race saw Stati drop from third to fourth and Quimby rising from seventh to fifth, finishing just six tenths behind Stati.

The next round is Mid-Ohio SpeedTour on 12 June.

GT World Challenge America – Sebring International Raceway

Australian Tom Sargent delivered two top ten finishes at Sebring International Raceway, demonstrating consistent pace all weekend.

The first qualifying session saw Sargent and teammate Kyle Washington secure 12th in the opening race, with a best lap time of 2:02.512.

The GMG Racing team piloted their Porsche 992 GT3 R to tenth, finishing just over five-tenths behind LAB Motorsport by GT Racing.

Sargent and Washington started race two in seventh but dropped back to eighth.

The next round of the 2025 GT World Challenge America is at Virginia International Raceway on 18-20 July.
