Australian Jack Doohan has begun the 2019/20 FIA Asian Formula 3 Championship on a high after snaring a race win during the opening round of the season in Sepang.

Racing for Philippine outfit Pinnacle Motorsport, Doohan started the weekend strong, grabbing a second place in the opening race before securing a well-deserved victory in the final race of the weekend.

The round began with wet and difficult conditions, as Doohan started the first race in seventh place before quickly progressing up the field alongside Dutch driver Joey Alders to ultimately finish in second place behind Alders.

With rain continuing to fall, Doohan fell down the field in the second race and finished in eighth outright after starting in P4, while Alders kept his lead and claimed victory.

The rain finally stopped for the third and final race as drivers were met with a nice dry track. Having started from pole position following a solid qualifying session the day before, Doohan got off to a strong start and never looked like losing his lead as he stormed home to a well-deserved win over Devlin DeFrancesco and Alders in third.

Doohan’s seven-second win saw him finish the round in second outright on 47 points and 18 behind Alders, while fellow Australian Tommy Smith ended the weekend with a pair of top 10 finishes and an eleventh.

The next round of the 2019/2020 FIA Asian Formula 3 Championship takes place in Dubai on 10-11 January.
