The MG Car Club Newcastle (MGCCN) has begun it’s 2022 Tar Speed Series in style, with more than 60 competitors taking part in the season opener at its traditional Ringwood Park motorsport complex.
With competitors getting up to four runs around the hill climb course, the winning driver in Tim Blake needed only three as he comfortably led the event from start to finish.
It was a dominant display from the Subaru WRX driver, who posted the outright fastest time on every occasion – his final attempt of 72.12 seconds enough to seal the round one win.
In second place, finishing seven tenths behind the winner was Kevin Akers, who steered his Carroll Clubman to the only other time under 73 seconds.
Akers’ first time of the day came in at 73.66 but he was able to bring that down to an impressive 72.82 as he looked to close in on Blake, who posted a time of 72.14 seconds on his second run.
Unfortunately for Akers, he was unable to reduce the gap of the leader as his remaining two times were slower than his second attempt for the day.
More than one and half seconds off the runner-up was Adam Single, who won an intriguing battle against three other drivers for the final podium position.
On paper, the result seemed quite close between Single, Peter Akers and Andrew Fraser, with just three and half tenths of a second separating them, however the Subaru WRX diver didn’t seem to be under threat as his consistency was the difference.
Being fastest of the trio on three occasions, Single’s best time of 72.58 came on his second run, as did Peter Akers, although his remaining two times hovered around the 75 second mark, while Peter’s time dropped to below 76 seconds.
As for Fraser, his fastest run of 74.92 seconds came on his final run of the day and as a result, he pipped Steve Brydie by three tenths to round out the top five.
