Barge Racing secures Sandown 6 Hour hattrick

The Barge Racing regularity relay team won the Sandown 6 Hour regularity relay.

The Barge Racing regularity relay team has continued its dominance in the popular grassroots discipline, after winning the 2024 Sandown 6 Hour regularity relay.

With almost 100 entrants spread across a huge field of 20 teams, there was plenty to occur throughout the six-hour event, only for the MX-5 Club of NSW team to come out on top and win the event for the third consecutive year.

While rain affected the first three hours of competition and caused chaos throughout, the Barge Racing quartet managed to guide their MX5s to top spot by the second hour, and remained in the lead for the rest of the event.

Such was their dominance, the winners ended up with a margin over second place of almost 800 points – which was almost the same amount of points splitting the rest of the top 10.

Completing 183 laps overall, Barge Racing had three of its drivers post the fourth-best scores overall, with Sean Byers’ amassing the lowest amount of points across the whole day.

Taking out the event’s fourth least points was the team’s manager, Stewart Temesvary, who was pleased with the win.

“Rain affected for the first three hours of competition with those drivers who nominated dry time unable to get close to their nominated times,” Temesvary said.

“The weather eventually cleared and the track dried to a point where dry times could be achieved, but by this stage, the teams who adopted a wet weather strategy were too far in front to be caught.

“Our victory came down to meticulous planning, cohesive teamwork throughout the event and having a clear strategy.”

Hosting the event was the Porsche Club of Victoria, and the club had a number of teams showcase their quality over the course of the day, including the Tango Malango Racing and Porsche Specialists, who rounded out the podium.
