Toowoomba’s Will Brown is letting the emotions of winning his first Repco Supercars Championship sink in, after claiming the 2024 title on the streets of Adelaide this past weekend.
The 26-year old clinched the championship on Saturday before storming back to victory in a way alluded to as Supercars’ equivalent of Steven Bradbury moment.
After being spun out by former teammate Brodie Kostecki on Lap 9, Brown dropped from third to 22nd, only to climb back to the front in part thanks to numerous incidents between other drivers.
With five wins and 19 podium finishes in 24 races, Brown set a historic mark in his first year with Supercars powerhouse Triple Eight Race Engineering.
“I don’t think today’s achievements have sunk in yet. I thought it was cool seeing Brodie (Kostecki) winning the championship last year and I was in Broc’s situation so I knew how it felt, but right now I don’t know how to take it – it’s really exciting,” Brown said.
“It’s been something I’ve been working towards for a long time now and to join Red Bull Ampol Racing this year and win with them in my first year is fantastic. I just want to thank everyone in the team who have done a faultless job all year – that’s why we’re in this position.
“I also want to thank my teammate, Broc. I turn up every weekend thinking he’s going to beat me, so I have to turn up and compete as best as I can and make sure we’re fast. That’s why I think we’re both up here being one-two in the championship.
“I’ve also loved working with Andrew (Edwards) this year. He’s a super smart guy and we worked so closely in the off season to get to where we are today and made me step up to another level.”
Brown has become the first driver since Dick Johnson in 1984 to score a podium at every event on the calendar, and is the first Queensland-born champion since Johnson in 1989.
“I think last year I had good raw pace but I didn’t put it together every weekend and I wasn’t consistent. I really wanted to win the championship this year and I knew that would take consistency, and to get a podium every round this year is really cool,” Brown added.
Brown now adds the Australian Touring Car Championship title alongside his illustrious CV, which also includes the 2016 Australian Formula 4 Championship, 2016 Toyota 86 Series, and 2019 TCR Australia Series wins.
While the 2024 Supercars season has come to a close, excitement is already building for 2025, which includes Supercars Finals series, which will determine the 2025 champion through an all-new knockout format across the final three events of next season.
The highly-anticipated 2025 Repco Supercars Championship kicks off three months from now at the Sydney 500, February 21-23 at Sydney Motorsport Park.
