Aussies in action at British Grand Prix
Monday 15 July, 2019
While Daniel Ricciardo secured an impressive seventh place in the 2019 Formula 1 British Grand Prix, fellow Australians James Davison and Alex Peroni had a mixed weekend in the event’s support categories.
With Davison competing in the Masters Historic Formula One and Alex Peroni in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, both drivers came away with a top 10 finish in one race and a DNF in the other.
However it was Davison who had a more enjoyable weekend with the Melbourne-born driver taking out the category’s second race of the weekend in emphatic fashion after starting the race from 17th.
In the first race, a broken drive shaft to Davison’s Lotus 81 saw him bow out after two laps despite leading the field for practice, qualifying and the opening laps.
Davison bounced straight back in the second race to gain a number of positions early on before capitalising on a handful more when early leader Jamie Constable went off track with a broken wheel.
Following the restart, Davison surged to the lead and never relinquished it for the remaining laps as he comfortably fought off challenges from rival drivers.
It was a tougher weekend for Peroni who had a slow start but managed to redeem himself in the opening race before being an unlucky victim in the second.
Peroni had it all to do in the first race despite showing good form in practice sessions - the Tasmanian eventually qualifying in 21st.
Some smart strategy and aggressive driving saw Peroni climb an impressive 11 places to sneak into the top 10 and earn a good starting position for the next race.
Unfortunately for the youngster, when pushing for more spots in the second race, he was hit just three laps in which bent his steering and forced him in to the garage to call it a day.
Grabbing one point from the weekend saw Peroni move closer to 16th placed Lirim Zendeli in the outright standings and take his season tally to five points.
The next round of the FIA Formula 3 Championship will once again be as a support category to Formula 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix on 2 – 4 August.
