Calan Williams and Jack Doohan have enjoyed solid weekends during the Euroformula Open’s sixth round at the Red Bull Ring in Austria finishing in points paying positions.

In the series’ first 20-lap race, both drivers managed to finish inside the top five - Doohan’s outright second place also securing the Rookie class win, while Williams ended the race in fourth after starting the race in fifth place.

Doohan’s performance was his equal best for the 2019 season and what made it even better was that he started the race in seventh outright before winning an entertaining dual with Williams. Doohan then took more scalps before closing the gap to just half a second of eventual leader Marino Sato in what was a chaotic race.

In the second race, Williams was the big winner of the two drivers with another top five finish, while Doohan limped home in 13th after being forced to pit on the opening lap to change his front wing.

Again Williams finished the race higher than he started, qualifying in eighth place and the 19-year-old got off to the perfect start, passing both Javier Gonzalez and Christian Hahn in the opening stages to move into sixth, before passing the pitting Doohan later in the first lap.

For the remainder of the race, Williams didn’t budge from fifth, defending his spot against both Gonzalez and Hahn before eventual sixth placed Billy Monger challenged the Western Australian, only for him to comfortably fend off the Briton.

As Williams left Monger in his wake, he was focused on a podium finish with less than two seconds separating him, fourth placed Lukas Dunner and Linus Lundqvist in third, however it was to no avail as Williams happily settled in fifth.

In the outright standings, William’s points haul saw him move above Monger and Nicolai Kjaergaard to break into the top 10, while Doohan’s weekend saw him lock in seventh outright and build an 18 point gap over eighth placed Hahn.

The next round of the series will be at Silverstone in England on 7-8 September.
