Thomas Randle has been awarded with the Dunlop Super2 Series title with Supercars confirming the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 would double as the final round of the 2020 season.

After consulting with Motorsport Australia, the decision was made to wrap up the season as a result of the uncertainty surrounding border closures and COVID-19 restrictions within each Australian state.

With three rounds having already been run in 2020, Motorsport Australia has confirmed that the series has completed enough rounds to deem a winner as the current circumstances in the country make it unviable to hold any more rounds this year.

Randle, who claimed three ARMOR ALL Pole Positions and three race wins, officially ended the latest round at Bathurst with a 47 point lead ahead of his closest rival in Will Brown.

It was a highly consistent season from the Victorian, who finished inside the top two in every race and claimed at least one win in all three rounds this year, including February’s Superloop Adelaide 500 and the Truck Assist Sydney SuperSprint in July.

Rounding out the series' top three was Jordan Boys, while first-year driver Jayden Ojeda finished fourth in the standings and was the best of the rookie drivers.

As the series now looks to run all of next year’s rounds as part of the Repco Supercars Championship, Supercars Chief Operating Officer Shane Howard believed the right decision had been made.

“Unfortunately, given the current border closures between QLD, NSW and Victoria it is not feasible to conduct further rounds of this year’s Series,” Howard said.

“As confirmed by Motorsport Australia in September we can crown a Champion and would like to congratulate Thomas for claiming this year’s title.

“We thank all competitors for their efforts under the most challenging circumstances this category has had to face in its 20-year history.

“We look forward to the opportunity of fulfilling all six rounds in 2021.”

The six-round Dunlop Super2 Series 2021 calendar will be released in the coming weeks.
