Leyburn looking good for new date

Friday 20 August, 2021
The Leyburn Sprints has a jam packed schedule planned for its September running.
After having to postpone the 2021 Historic Leyburn Sprints, event organisers believe everything is on track for the event to go ahead on its new date in September.

In celebration of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix that ran near the town of Leyburn, around 200 classic and performance cars are expected to compete in the event.

Part of the recently released program, the round-the-houses sprints will take up most of the event with a host of other activities showcased.

From demonstration runs of the 1922 Wikner Ford Special and the NASCAR winning Marcos Ambrose car to the popular Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine and meet-and-greet appearances by the Leyburn Legends, there is plenty for motorsport fans to enjoy.

In addition to the motorsport activities, there is entertainment for all with country markets, exhibitor and trade displays, a fun run and charity auction also part of the jam-packed weekend.

Sprints President Tricia Chant was thrilled that most competitors, officials and activations were able to commit to the new dates.

“We’ve got everything lined up again for 11-12 September and are expecting a huge crowd – there’s a lot of pent-up enthusiasm for the Sprints since we were forced by COVID to cancel the 2020 event,” Chant said.

“We also have all current COVID -19 requirements in place to protect our visitors and of course will be responding to any changes if they arise.

“It’s been a big task to move everything back three weeks and like everyone we’ve walked a tightrope with COVID-19, but we’ve done it and I thank everyone from our suppliers and volunteer officials to competitors, sponsors, exhibitors and traders.

“The Historic Leyburn Sprints attracts visitors from a wide area of Queensland and will be a major event for the Southern Darling Downs when everyone is in need of a boost to their spirits or their business trading.”

Tickets for the event start at $20 for adults, while children under 14 can enter for free. Competition for both days starts from 8am AEST.
