The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship has officially shifted this month’s Truck Assist Winton SuperSprint, with the event to now take place in Sydney in front of crowds.

With the Queensland Government recently amending its COVID-19 travel protocols, restricting those travelling from Victoria from entering the state, Supercars were forced in to a late change.

As a result of the revamp, the championship will race again at Sydney Motorsport Park on 18-19 July, with the Truck Assist Sydney SuperSprint to also feature a race under lights.

In the same format to the BPUltimate Sydney Supersprint, the two-day event will have the first of three races take place on the Saturday night, before running the remaining two on Sunday afternoon.

Following on from the championship’s successful return last month and the continued support from the NSW Government, Supercars CEO Sean Seamer believed the decision to return to Eastern Creek was sensible.

“Following discussions with all government health authorities on the new interstate restrictions, the practicable solution is to go back to Sydney Motorsport Park later this month,” Seamer said.

“Sydney Motorsport Park was a logical choice as we have a proven track record of completing a safe event there based on what we achieved last week.

“Following NSW State Government guidance, we are thrilled that we will be able to accommodate fans each day of the July event.”

Details for crowd limitation and ticketing information will be released in the coming days, with paddock access to be limited to just teams and officials.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres was also pleased the event would be able to accommodate motorsport fans.

“The fans have been waiting for the adrenaline rush that comes when rubber hits the track and cars fly off the start line of a Championship race,” Minister Ayres said.

“The NSW Government has invested in the redevelopment of Sydney Motorsport Park to ensure it remains a favourite among drivers, teams and spectators and we can’t wait to host Supercars in July.

“The NSW Government is a proud supporter of motorsport and Supercars Australia, and it’s fitting that this milestone event will take place at Sydney Motorsport Park.”

July’s reshuffle means the New South Wales circuit will host three rounds in 2020, with the season finale scheduled to run at Sydney Motorsport Park in December.

The Truck Assist Sydney SuperSprint will take place at Sydney Motorsport Park from 18-19 July.
