The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship holds another round in Townsville this weekend with the Robson Civil Projects Townsville SuperSprint to wrap up the Championship’s historic four-week frenzy.
Ahead of the second consecutive meeting at Reid Park, motorsport.org.au looks at the key news and details for the event.
Remaining calendar released
At the conclusion of Fox Sports’ coverage of the NTI Townsville Supersprint, details for the revised 2020 schedule were announced with three rounds confirmed to see off the season.
The Bend Motorsport Park was brought back into the fold with the South Australian circuit to host back-to-back rounds in the back half of September, while the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 was named as the season finale.
While Bathurst was always a chance to host the final round of the season, Supercars confirmed it would be moving back one week from its traditional date with the great race to now run on 18 October.
The round news
Like last weekend, two categories will play a supporting role to the Championship this weekend with the North Queensland Supersprinters class to once again have five 20-minute sessions over the course of the two days.
Replacing the Townsville tin tops will be the Hyundai Excels and the popular grassroots category has attracted a number of top end drivers for this weekend too, with Dunlop Super2 regulars Will Brown, Brodie Kostecki, Broc Feeney and Angelo Mouzouris all confirmed to compete.
Not only has the category pulled in some big names for its appearance on the national stage, but there will be quite a few drivers who will be going back-to-back after a number of them took part in the Queensland Racing Drivers Association’s Warwick 1000 at Morgan Park just days ago.
Some other major changes fans may notice will be the usual driver switch at Matt Stone Racing with Zane Goddard stepping back after two weeks and Jake Kostecki returning to the action, while Sunday’s schedule to start and finish one hour earlier.
