Sargent continues fight for Carrera Cup US title

Monday 26 June, 2023
Thomas Sargent managed a podium in the latest round of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America.
Tom Sargent has continued his solid run in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America, ending the fourth round of the season in second place on the 2023 standings.

While series leader Riley Dickinson extended his lead at the top over Sargent thanks to two podiums, the young Aussie still produced a solid pair of results ending the weekend with a podium himself.

Having finished the last round at Miami with his worst result of the year in P20, Sargent bounced back in style at the famous Watkins Glen, snatching third over Alex Sedgwick by less than second.

Unfortunately, Dickinson finished ahead of the New South Welshman but Sargent still produced a solid run, having made up two places after qualifying in fifth place.

Sargent had high hopes of finishing the weekend with another podium and gave it his all in the second race of the weekend but was unlucky to miss out due to a safety car.

The 21-year-old once again started from fifth but could only gain one position in the race as he finished in fourth place – his hopes of podium gone when the safety car was brought out 10 minutes from the end – giving him no chance of catching up.

With Dickinson securing another runner-up finish for the weekend, Sargent fell further behind on the standings with the gap now 66 points at the midway point of the season, however he remains comfortably in second place.

Also competing in an international Carrera Cup competition was 2022 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship winner Harri Jones, who was entered in the German edition of the popular one-make category.

It was a mixed weekend for the Queenslander, who was involved in an incident in the first race of the round at Circuit Zandvoort – eventually finishing 15th overall.

Jones recovered in the second race to secure a 10th overall and a third place in the rookie class, scoring valuable points towards his championship

Fellow Queenslander and Porsche factory driver Matt Campbell had a weekend to forget in the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen as he and Felipe Nasr suffered issues throughout the endurance race at Watkins Glen.

With rain cancelling qualifying, Campbell and Nasr started the race in sixth place and although the Aussie was fastest of the two during their stints - their Porsche 963 had problems half way through and they fell significantly down the order to limp home in 52nd overall – 100 laps off their Porsche Penske teammates, who won the race.
