Cooper Webster has put himself in the box seat to win the 2023 Indian F4 Championship title after a productive weekend in the penultimate round of the season.
With five races at Madras International Circuit in Chennai, Webster ended the busy weekend with three victories, a pair of fourth place finishes and the fastest lap on four occasions.
Right from the get-go, Webster was the driver to beat as he secured pole position in both of the round’s qualifying sessions, before enjoying a lights to flag victory in the first race.
Unfortunately an oil sensor issue in the lead up to the second race forced him to start from the pitlane, however the Victorian utilised his pace and charged up the order to pick up a fourth-place finish.
Webster began Sunday’s three-race schedule with top honours in the third race of the meeting after an entertaining battle with 2022 Ferrari Driver Academy Asia Pacific and Oceania Selection Program participant Akshay Bohra.
The day’s reverse grid race had Webster start from sixth where he managed to make up two positions to finish fourth, before producing a commanding performance in the final race to claim the victory over Bohra by 20 seconds.
The strong weekend saw Webster take his championship total to 207.5 points, putting him more than 40 points ahead of Bohra ahead of the final round, where a maximum of 75 points is up for grabs.
Webster wasn’t the only Australian taking part in the round, with Tasmanian Jack Taylor picking up some of his best results of the season.
Finishing ninth in the opening race, Taylor improved to eighth in the second before a fourth-place finish in the third outing of the weekend marked his best result for the year.
A fifth-place finish in the second last race marked two consecutive top-five finishes, before dropping to eighth in the final race of the round.
Meanwhile, a quartet of Australians competed in the Intercontinental GT Challenge’s Gulf 12 Hour over the weekend, which featured Scott Andrews, Stephen Grove, Brenton Grove and Kenny Habul across a mix of teams.
The Grove father-son duo were racing alongside incoming Repco Supercars Championship full-time driver Richie Stanaway in the Grove Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R (992), while Habul was behind the wheel of the SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo alongside Philip Ellis of Switzerland and Austrians Martin Konrad and Dominik Baumann.
The best performing Australian was Andrews though, who along with American Anton Dias Perera and Italians David Fumanelli and Giorgio Roda, steered the Kessel Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 to seventh overall and a ProAm class podium.
Habul and his crew finished the endurance race at Yas Marina Circuit in 17th overall and seventh in class, while an incident early on saw the Groves retire after one hour and 20 minutes.
