Scott McLaughlin impressed in the opening BP Supercars All Stars Eseries round
The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship took on a different look on Wednesday night, with drivers jumping behind the wheel of simulators to put on a show in three entertaining races.
DJR Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin once again proved he is quick behind the wheel of any machine, winning two of the three races on Wednesday night – those wins coming fresh off his own win in the INDYCAR iRacing challenge.
Competing on the same iRacing platform, the entire Supercars field battled it out at the iconic Phillip Island circuit in Victoria, as well as a race at the famous Monza facility in Italy.
While Erebus’ Anton De Pasquale qualified on pole for the opening race, it was McLaughlin who quickly jumped to the front and that was where he stayed, with teammate Fabian Coulthard finishing second and Cameron Waters making it an all Ford podium.
Tickford’s Jack Le Brocq won the second, reverse grid race also held at a virtual Phillip Island, despite crossing the line in second. De Pasquale had taken the chequered flag, but a post-race 30 second penalty for contact with Le Brocq sent him down the order. Walkinshaw Andretti United pair Chaz Mostert and Bryce Fullwood finished second and third respectively.
Monza held the final race for the evening, and it was a wild, crash-filled affair at a circuit not all Supercars drivers were familiar with. Ultimately, McLaughlin was too quick for his opponents, taking the night’s final chequered flag ahead of Tickford’s Cameron Waters and Mostert.
“I had so much fun today and I think a lot of people had fun,” McLaughlin said post-race.
“That’s the main thing. I hope everyone at home enjoyed it because I really think this is going to be cool in the interim thing we can do while we wait for our real racing again.”
The next round of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries will be held on Wednesday, 15 April, with drivers taking on two iconic European tracks in the UK’s Silverstone Circuit and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.
