Motorsport Australia has confirmed changes to the medical requirements for rally and circuit competitors renewing their licences.

As of 1 August 2024, medicals will only be required upon renewal for those aged 60 and above – an increase from the previous age limit of 45.

The Motorsport Australia Board has approved the change, with the support of the National Medical Advisory Committee (NMAC) and Motorsport Risk and Safety Committee for rally and circuit licence holders.

Updated licence renewal forms are now available on the Motorsport Australia website, with our membership team on standby to assist anyone wishing to renew their licence.

Those wishing to obtain their circuit or rally licence for the first time will still be required to complete a medical declaration, which is the standard around the world for first-time licence holders.

  • The first time they apply for a Motorsport Australia Circuit or Rally licence, regardless of age.
  • Every two years upon renewal of a Circuit or Rally licence, after the age of 60.

Are there any changes to the medical requirements for international Circuit or Rally licences?
  • There are no changes to the medical requirements for international licences
  • International licences require annual medical examinations.
  • The sporting and administrative requirements for international licences, including medical, are dictated by the FIA.
What forms are required to complete the medical examination?
  • The medical forms are available here.
  • Your GP must complete Form A in accordance with the Motorsport Australia Medical Standards, which should be brought with you to your examination.
  • Your GP must complete Form B before submitting to Motorsport Australia for review.
Who can complete the Medical Examination?
  • The medical examination can be completed by any GP registered to practice medicine in Australia.
  • A nurse cannot complete a medical examination.
I recently applied for a Circuit or Rally licence under the old medical framework, and my application is pending specific clearance for a medical condition. Do I still need to fulfil the clearance request from Motorsport Australia?
  • Yes, any known conditions still require specific medical clearance per the Motorsport Australia Medical Standards.
Why has this change been implemented?
  • These changes have been implemented to make participating in motorsport easier.
  • There are significant costs associated with undertaking medicals, and while they are still an important safety requirement within the sport, Motorsport Australia appreciates that many people are choosing not to renew their licence based on the additional costs of medicals.
  • We have reviewed our process in consultation with other ASNs and have moved to align our standards with other leading FIA associated bodies, with consultation and approval from Motorsport Risk and Safety Committee, as well as the National Medical Advisory Committee.
